From gang life to grad school -- 'I would've never seen myself in this position'

From gang life to grad school -- 'I would've never seen myself in this position'

  1. This article takes me back to my early years of teaching in Fitchburg. I had many students, who, like Anton, were mixed up in gangs, drugs, and violence. My heart bled for them. Anton's story is amazing, because he ultimately turned his life around. I often wonder if my past students were able to turn their lives around into something positive and good. I know one in particular did not, because my brother actually shared a cell with him. That was a few years back; maybe things changed for this particular person. I hope to think so.

    1. I just finished reading the article. I found the article to be both inspirational and emotional. It inspired me because Anton turned his life around. He was a drug dealer but then he went to college. It made me sad that his mom supplied him with drugs. It surprised me that he got inspired to learn while he was in jail. Someone with a life sentence recommended a book to him called "The Destruction of Black Civilization." I think that all city schools should make students read this article. I think students will get inspired like Anton.

  2. Anton's life is very motivational and inspiring. He has shown others that no matter how bad your life is you can always make it better. The word I thought of when I read this was "change". You never really think of how much that word could mean, you only think of the little changes in life. Anton made a enormous change from being a drug dealer to a college graduate. This man was throwing his life away and his mom was helping him do it. Can you imagine your mom helping you kill yourself? The answer is no Anton needed a stable home with a loving mother but after some time to think in jail he found something better than drugs, books. That is what made Anton change when he finally found something worth his time reading about great African Americans. So Anton did change and not only a little but big enough to save his life.

  3. I thought it was an encouraging true story that proves that any one that doesn't make the best decisions can change. Anton might have taken almost ten years to realize what he can accomplish in this world, but it still made a massive (positive) impact on his life. Personally I can kind of connect. I was once thinking of having a low quality job (not an illegal one) but once I looked at the money I made and how It could impact my future family I decided to reach for a better paying and more well fit job for me.

  4. From reading the article " From Gang Life To Grad School" I was able to sense a lot of determination. The fact that Anton could just take the bad situations in his life and turn them into a college education and do well is incredible. He clearly is smart even though he may not have made smart decisions in his past. It just warms my heart that even though he couldn't get a job, he never gave up. But what this really means is that no matter who you are, what you have done, or if you are in a bad situation you can still get a decent education and put your life back on track. You just cant give up. Believe in you self. You can do anything you put your mind to.

  5. To be honest this is an inspirational story, and I'm not going to lie I did surprise me that a kid his age would be selling drugs. Its surprised me even more when the mum was the one supplying him with the drugs. The fact that he could flip his life around like that is so inspirational, he also wanted to become a professor instead of a drug dealer. This makes me wonder what his teachers thought about him while he was in school did they gossip about him to each other, did they judge him, or just let him be? Now I'm wondering where he is now did he ever get to teach? Also after deciding to turn his life around studying became natural that is great.

    1. I have the same questions, what did other people think of him? was he bullied or did he have trouble in school? did anyone try to help him or was he just totally disregarded?

  6. Reading this it is a very influential story on how a life of wrong can turn to a life of right. House is someone to admire for his life story. I think this because he did all these things then realized that it wasn't right and said "I don't want to live how I'm living anymore" so he threw out his old life and committed to a new life full of hard work. He took his interests of gangs and black history and made it a goal to write books about it. He made it look easy to drop years of your old life throw it all away and start over. It's not easy which says a lot about his personality and makes him all the more an inspirational figure to others.

  7. I think its amazing how he turned his life around just like that. one second he was selling drugs to pregnant women then the next he was in collage getting his diploma. when he got out of prison and could not get a job anywhere because of his criminal record he thought that's not right and own his own went back to collage. his story is so amazing and i think if you show this to other people they will think that too.

  8. When i first read this story, i was amazed! This person had lived in a bad area, and that influenced his choices. I was surprised that he was pretending to sell drugs at that age, and even more when his Mother gave him real ones, even if it was only so he wouldn't get hurt. It is incredible how he had just decided to change, and he had the determination to go through with it.

  9. This story is inspiring. It shows how someone, who is completely lost, can pull themselves together and change their life around. House grew up with a drug-addicted mother. and following her example, wanted to sell drugs. He started by selling fake drugs, but his mom bought him real one, so he wouldn't get killed by drug-addicts. He dropped out of High School at 16, and went to prison at 18. As soon as he got out, he continued selling drugs. After another few years in jail, he learned about "The Destruction of Black Civilization". It changed his life around, and he went back to college. He now lives a completely different life, happily.

  10. This story is very inspiring and it makes me realize how much I take for granted. He has a very hard home life with his mom. He drops out of school and his mom is supplying him with drugs. He also gets bullied a lot for being black. He decides to read more about black history and wants to write some books. At age 31 he got accepted into a college and really turned his life around. In just a few years he went from not caring about his life to inspiring others. Anton's story can change someone's life for the better. Overall, this story is motivational and an eye opener for me.

  11. I think that Anton House's story is very inspirational. At 8 he already knew he wanted to be a drug dealer and at 13 he became one. A big reason Anton was into drugs was because his mother was an addict and she was the one who got him real drugs to sell. He was heavily influenced by his mother and the neighbor hood he lived in with gangs, drugs, and violence. But when Anton was 18 and in prison for possession of cocaine he turned his life around and got interested in reading about black history, philosophy, and more. Now he has a bachelors of arts degree in history and has proven to himself that he is just as capable of success as everyone else.

  12. I think this story is really inspirational. A lot of prisoners just think that's there life and they cant do anything about it. Anton thought like that until a prison mate that was in there for life gave him a book. even though it was only a book it inspired him to learn more about gangs and black history. now Anton House has a collage degree and plans to teach about black and gang history. Anton's story should be shared with everyone who does or sells drugs to help change there mind set and goals in life.

  13. I think Anton's story is very inspirational. I think it is amazing that he could change his life around. I hope this inspires others who have this same problem to change their lives too. Anton decided to take the right path in life. Unlike other drug dealers he decided to stop. I just can't believe his own mother was supplying the drugs for him. Just because you parents or family are drug dealers does not mean you have to be. You could change the way of life for future generations. I can connect to this article because my mother teaches alternative boys from grades 7-10. She works with them everyday and teaches them science. She has inspired some of the students to stop doing drugs and she has had situations where the police got involved. These boys have been kicked out of middle or high schools. I look up to my mom because she has the ability to inspire and help theses students. Now that Anton is going back to school he will have a bright future if he stays away from drugs. I really think this article is inspiring.

  14. I think the story is inspirational and motivational to people who want to be in a gang, but suffer the consequences and it can motivate them to go to school and get a degree and be a better person and stay off drugs and out of prison

  15. I think this story is both motivational and inspirational because of the fact that Atone was a 13 year old kid selling drugs and being sent to prison twice, one of those times being a 5-year sentence and while serving the 5 years he received a equivalency diploma. He entered parkside in 2007 as a full time student and after being rejected from jobs with his felonies and no expirence. House later was excepted into Howard university in Washington for its two year masters degree . Atone's goal is to become a professor and to write books

  16. This article really surprised me in the beginning when it said "RACINE - At 8, he knew he wanted to be a drug dealer when he grew up." The fact that his mom was supplying him with the drugs really surprised me. His mom should be the one trying to make him stop. I am really glad that Anton learned his lesson and was a better parent for his son than his mother was to him. Some questions I have is Did his relatives know what was going on? Did they try to stop it? Did the school know? Someone could have helped him earlier, but him changing his-self around is awesome.

  17. To me, Aton's story is amazing. The way he just turned his life around surprises me. From being a 13 year old drug dealer to becoming a college graduate is incredible. The story "From gang life to Grad school" is both inspirational and motivational for kids who might be involved with drugs and gangs. When I read this story the word that came to mind was "influence". Aton was influenced by both his mom and people in his community. He made wrong choices and had to deal with the consequences. But, he changed his life completely when he decided he wanted to go to college. Aton's goals in life are to become a professor and to write books. Aton is now influencing kids everywhere.

  18. I think this article was both inspirational and influential. Anton started selling drugs at a young age, and kept doing it for years. It is amazing how he was able to change his bad habits after all those years. This article shows other troubled kids that they can turn their life around if they put their mind to it. Anton has an amazing, inspirational story, which could help kids with the same problems. He proves that if you have a goal in life you can achieve it.

  19. Anton's story is very inspiring. When I read this article, the word desperate came to mind. I think that Anton was desperate as a teenager to make other people do the things he did because he felt so badly about himself. Another example of when Anton was desperate was when he turned to selling crack again when he got out of prison because he had to support his 18 month old son. When Anton started to turn his life around, it inspired me. I think it was amazing how much he put into getting his degree, and getting out of his bad habits. Anton ended up being a very successful person and I think his story I inspiring.

  20. This story is very inspirational, and it can motivate or inspire other kids or teenagers in similar situations to change their lives also. The fact that Anton was selling drugs at 13, and wen to juvie for the first time at 15 just sounds crazy to me. He grew up in such awful situations, its inspiring to anybody how he changed his life for the better. He went to prison for 5 years and while in prison he he started reading everyday about black history to find who he is. House received his high school equivalency diploma while in prison. He entered Parkside in 2007 as a full time student. He was excepted to Howard University in Washington for a two year masters degree. Aton's goal is to become a professor, to write books about positive cultural identity. He never expected to see himself in this position.

  21. I really like this story because shows how anyone overcome any problems.By learning form past mistakes and striving for a goal and never give up he once he found the goal. It also show if u are willing to finish school can even if your setting is not good and you did not have good start to your life you overcome it.

  22. At age 8 Anton wanted to become a drug dealer, to actually selling drugs by the age of 13. Living conditions are harsh almost all around the world but with this mans story it show you how, if you just keep going you can become something even beyond than what you imagined. Anton was your typical gangster, went to "juvie", went to prison he has been there and done that. His entire life went into another direction, for the good because of a mistake. He knew that once he had a child he had to get his act together and that's exactly what he did. He read, he learned vocabulary, believe it or not he was shaping his future in prison. Once he got out of prison he knew what he was going to do with his life and he set himself a goal and went forward with it, he graduated college and was excepted to Howard University. Now he wants to become a professor and to write books about a "positive cultural identity". That just proves to you one thing, never judge a book by its cover.

  23. This story was very inspirational. Anton grew up in a very bad area where crime was basically a normal part of life, which led him to want to sell drugs. It seems crazy that he was already selling drugs at the age of 13, and he was in juvie at the age of 15. It is amazing that, after going to jail twice and having no job or money, he could find the motivation to turn his life around and finish getting an education. This can be used as an inspiration for anybody going through a bad time in their life.

  24. Anton's story is very inspiring and shows that if you put your mind to something you can really accomplish it. I think that Anton's story is crazy growing up right across the street from a "drug house". Also thinking that having the nice clothes and gold chains was cool and he wanted to be just like them. He wanted to be a drug dealer since he was 8 and became one when he was 13. He was selling "licked-off" lemon heads for $20 each. His mother gave him real drugs so he wouldn't get hurt or killed. She said in her own words "If you're going to do it, do it. Don't play because people will kill you." He went to juvie when he was 15 years old for carrying a sawed-off shotgun. A year later he was back on the streets selling drugs. He went to prison for the first time when he was 18, for the possession of cocaine. When he got out after two years he had an 18 month old kid. he had no job and it was hard for him to get one with a felony... so he was back to selling drugs. He went to prison again in 2001 and was in there for 5 years. While he was there he started to turn his life around after reading a book called "The Destruction of Black Civilization". He received his high school equivalency diploma while he was in prison. He enrolled and entered Parkside as a full-time student after being rejected from jobs and having 2 felonies on his record. He then got accepted into Howard University in Washington for a two-year masters program on African diaspora studies. He wanted to become a professor and educate black youths to "value themselves and rise above the reality of not having." He was 31 years old when he graduated college. This story shows that any one can become successful in life they just have to try.

  25. Anton's story reminds me of my cousin. Not because he sold drugs or did them because he didn't, but he was and had friends that were in the same situation as Anton. He grew up in a bad neighborhood of the city he lived in and there were drug deals right across the hallway from his apartment. He had friends doing and selling drugs, and even though he wont admit it he was probably right there with them while it was happening. That's what happens though. We don't realize how dangerous it actually is. The fact that Anton had to wear a bullet proof vest shows how bad it can get. There are drugs everywhere even though we don't realize it, and the worst part is more and more kids like Anton are doing and selling them. Also they are getting killed. That's why we need more people like Anton, to show you don't need drugs and that you can turn your life around. Now Anton got lucky. A lot of people, probably the majority of people born into this kind of environment cant change their lives around and they are stuck in the drug business their entire lives. But people like Anton are changing that. People like Anton make the difference. They are the ones who can change things like that, and get kids out of that business.
